How do the Olympic athletes keep their medals safe?

They use one of our wonderful bags or boxes!

Mini Olympics

We had an awesome time at our Mini Olympics event this morning. The children all competed in a number of challenges including tug of war, gum boot throwing and relay races. The winning team was Tonga. Well done to everyone who took part.

Here are a few pictures from the day. More to follow next week.

Maths - position, direction and orientation

We have been learning about quarter and half turns and have been using left and right to show the direction of the turn. We had a go at directing each other around a simple maze and then a more difficult maze. It was tricky to imagine that we were in the maze and to work out which direction we had to turn. Using the bears helped us to see this. Finally we had a go at drawing a maze for someone else to try.

Swimming Pictures

Room 6 enjoyed their first swimming lesson and have been writing a recount of it this week. Here are some pictures to show us listening, blowing bubbles, floating, kicking, gliding and swimming.

I am proud of all the awesome swimmers in Room 6. Everyone took up the challenge and enjoyed the first lesson. Things to remember for next week; hair ties, googles and swimming caps!

Welcome back to Term 3

Term 3 is going to be a busy term for us. We have swimming lessons, cross country, a technology project and our own Mini Olympics happening.

Some children have done so much writing in their SSW (super silent writing) journal that they have finished it and need another. It would be great if you could provide a lined writing book such as the Warwick 1B4 or similar for your child to continue independent writing. Many children are also in need of another whiteboard marker. We use these regularly in a variety of activities including spelling, word work and maths. Your child will be able to tell you if they need a new marker.

Thank you for your continued support.

End of term 2

Well done Room 6 for another awesome term. We have made lots of progress towards becoming more independent learners. I have enjoyed seeing the improvement in basic facts knowledge and also the development in reading and writing skills. I hope you all have a wonderful break and look forward to seeing you back at school next term.

Cultural Day

All of the Year 2 and Year 3 classes enjoyed our cultural morning earlier this week. Lots of children dressed up in an outfit that reflected their culture.

After singing the national anthem together all of the classes took turns in sharing something they had learnt. We saw songs in Japanese and Samoan, a Greek dance and many other items. Room 6 shared a Matariki story and waiata about the stars. Everyone had a chance to dance together at the end of the session.

After morning tea we returned to the hall for some story telling and singing. Finally it was time for our shared lunch. The food was delicious! It was great to see the children trying different foods.

Thank you so much to all the parents and carers who put together outfits, helped children learn lines, prepared food and to those who were able to help us with serving the food and clearing up on the day. It was a wonderful opportunity for the children to mix with other classes, share their learning and find out more about other cultures.

Assembly

Room 6 will be hosting the school assembly next week, Tuesday 28th June. The assembly starts at 2.15 pm and you are invited to join us. We will be presenting a story and waiata about Matariki.

Buddy Class

Buddy class is one of the most important times of the week at Pinehill School. The children love having the opportunity to mix with children from other year groups. Sometimes Room 6 get to be the big kids when we have a year 1 class to visit, other times we like to have the bigger kids visit us.  They enjoy playing games, building creations, drawing or reading stories.

Colour mixing

For art this week we tried making shades of a colour by adding a small amount of green, blue, orange or red paint to a large amount of white paint. Each time we added more colour we painted a new stripe onto our page. The colours got darker as we added more.
